Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world with 1 in 2 Australians developing skin cancer during their lifetime. Melanoma is the most commonly occurring cancer in 15 - 44 year olds living in Australia. Whilst intrinsic factors such as lack of pigmentation and family history play a part in this type of cancer a major contributor is environmental exposure.
Carepoint has the capability to provide skin cancer screens at the work-site. The service is delivered by an experienced Doctor (who holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Primary Care Skin Cancer Medicine) and is supported by current educational material to assist the employee's knowledge of the risks for skin cancer and of how to reduce those risks.
the examination
A consent form and questionnaire will be provided and the treating doctor will examine the skin using specialised equipment (Episcope). A record for each participant shows any skin concerns on a body map. This map will form the baseline for future examinations.
abnormalities
If any abnormalities are detected during the consultation, the candidate will be referred to follow this up with their own GP. Brochures regarding the different types of Skin Cancers will be given to the employee during their Skin Cancer Check; this will help educate employees of particular signs and changes to be aware of when they are examining their own skin.
